En la búsqueda constante de más adeptos, los dirigentes de una iglesia contratan a un joven actor para que escenifique la pasión de Cristo esperando que la puesta en escena haga que los creyentes (y los no tanto) pueda apuntalar su fe.
Pero las cosas no resultan como se esperaban ya que el actor se dedica a estudiar en todas las fuentes posibles con tal de darle más verosimilitud a los personajes, con el consiguiente desmayo de los religiosos ya que incluso se llega a afirmar en el transcurso de la obra que Cristo fue el hijo bastardo de un soldado romano.
En su momento esta cinta fue objeto de múltiples críticas por parte de los sectores ultra-conservadores que, por cierto, ni siquiera se tomaron la molestia de verla ya que, si así lo hubieran hecho, se hubieran encontrado con una cinta de un profundo sentido religioso que no hace sino cuestionar la imposibilidad de creer en la divinidad en el momento presente. En este sentido la cinta se relaciona con Yo te saludo María de Jean Luc Goddard y que también fue objeto de vilipendio por aquellos que hablan de moral, fe y buenas costumbres, pero que prueban las delicias de la carne de monaguillo.
En Guadalajara (la ciudad en la que sobrevivo) esta película fue exhibida en la hoy extinta Sala de Arte Gran Vía (a un costado de una iglesia), siendo objeto de múltiples ataques como la pinta que apareció en toda su fachada y que decía “No al cine ateo, muera el comunismo”.
